So,
What is Swaging?
Swaging
is a cold forging process
where the dimensions of an item are altered using a die
or dies.
Swaging is not the lining of a well by placing a slightly
smaller casing inside a bigger one. In water well repair,
our swaging tool employs steel jaws (dies) which exert
up to 200 tons of force, fusing a steel sleeve to the
existing casing. This process restores the casing back
to its original shape, thickness & strength. Here
are three common methods for swaging that we use in the
repair of water wells:
Swage Repair no. 1
I’ve Got Bad Water in the Upper Aquifer!
Years ago, before the intrusion of industry, farming,
and population
growth, the quality of water from the primary aquifer
was superior. One of the prices we all pay for progress
is looking for better water in the deeper zones of a well.
If a well has contamination in upper zones it should be
sealed to stop the infiltration into the uncontaminated
zones.
Our unique solution to this problem involves using a sealant
on the outside of an expandable sleeve (see illustration).
The sleeve is lowered and swaged out, bonding the sleeve
to the casing. The sealant is sandwiches between the sleeve
and the casing, filling any gaps. An additional sleeve
is then swaged for reinforcement. The end result is a
well that is free of transmission from a contaminated
zone.
Swage Repair no. 2
There’s a Hole in My Casing!
A small hole in a well can cause big problems. Holes can
let in contaminates, debris, as well as adding “fill”
to the bottom of a well. Small holes tend to not stay
small holes. Formation material (sand and gravel) entering
holes make them even larger. A dentist will fill a cavity
to prevent the loss of a tooth. In the same way, a swage
repair in a water well will prevent the potential loss
of that well.
Swage Repair no. 3
My Well Just Caved in!
A break in a well occurs when extraneous forces cause
the metal in the casing to stress, fatigue, and then fail.
Some of the common reasons for casing failure are ground
subsidence (stove-piping), ground movement along fault
lines, exterior voids or caverns collapsing due to formation
erosion, or simply the toll from years of corrosion. Cave-ins
are among the toughest well repairs. In the many years
of dealing with these tough problems Welenco Water Well
Technology has developed powerful swaging tools that can
repair and reinforce these areas with thick strong casing
making the well as good as a new.
